Workshop Introduction

To support the expansion of eduroam access across member institutions, SomaliREN is hosting a comprehensive three-day eduroam Workshop for its members in Zone 1, Mogadishu. Eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. It allows students, researchers, and staff from participating institutions to obtain internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop. Somalia is among the countries that have deployed eduroam. Currently, eduroam is only available at the SomaliREN Secretariat Office. This workshop marks the beginning of our initiative to deploy eduroam at member institutions' centers, such as university campuses and research institution offices.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Equip participants with foundational Linux skills essential for deploying a RADIUS server.
  • Provide a comprehensive understanding of eduroam, its benefits, and technical requirements.
  • Guide participants through the installation and configuration of a FreeRADIUS server and LDAP/MySQL.
  • Connect RADIUS to LDAP/MySQL and configure Wi-Fi access points for eduroam deployment.
  • Enable participants to confidently deploy eduroam at their home institutions.

Requirements:

  • Participants must bring their own laptops with functional Wi-Fi or Ethernet capabilities for internet access. Internet connectivity will be provided at the workshop venue.

Prerequisites:

  • Basic understanding of TCP/IP.
  • Knowledge in Linux will be advantageous for understanding and practicing, though Linux basics will be covered on the first day.
  • Passion for learning and applying new skills.
