The Somali Research and Education Network (SomaliREN) is pleased to announce a 3-day workshop on library management and open science data for higher education and research institutions. The workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about best practices in library management, as well as the latest developments in open science data and its impact on research and education. Additionally, participants will be trained on the SomaliREN centralized open-access digital repository. 

The workshop will conclude with a day dedicated to discussing the formation and establishment of the Somali Librarians and Knowledge Managers Society, which aims to support and promote the professional development of librarians and knowledge managers in Somalia.

Objectives:

To provide participants with an overview of library management best practices and the latest developments in open science data.

To discuss the challenges and opportunities facing libraries in the Somali research and education sector.

To explore the potential benefits of a Somali Librarians and Knowledge Managers Society and to discuss the steps needed to establish such a society.

Target Audience

The workshop is open to librarians, ICT directors, information professionals, researchers, and educators from higher education and research institutions in Somalia.

Workshop Content

 Day 1: Library Management

Introduction to library management best practices and the latest developments in open science data

The role of libraries in the research and education sector

Challenges facing libraries in Somalia

Case studies of successful library management in the Somali context

Day 2: Open Science Data

Introduction to open science data and its importance in the research and education sector

Best practices for managing and sharing open science data

Challenges facing open science data in Somalia

Case studies of successful open science data management in the Somali context

Day 3: Somali Librarians and Knowledge Managers Society

Discussion on the benefits of a Somali Librarians and Knowledge Managers Society

Steps needed to establish such a society

Opportunities for collaboration and networking among members of the society

Methodology

The workshop will be a combination of lectures, group discussions, case studies, and hands-on training. Participants will have the opportunity to work with relevant tools and technologies, and to share their experiences and best practices with other attendees.

Outcomes

Participants will have a deeper understanding of library management best practices and the latest developments in open science data.

Participants will be aware of the challenges and opportunities facing libraries in the Somali research and education sector.

Participants will have a clear understanding of the potential benefits of a Somali Librarians and Knowledge Managers Society and the steps needed to establish such a society.

Conclusion

The workshop will provide participants with a unique opportunity to gain knowledge and insights about library management and open science data, and to explore the potential benefits of a Somali Librarians and Knowledge Managers Society. SomaliREN invites all interested parties to register for the workshop and contribute to the discussions on the establishment of a Somali Librarians and Knowledge Managers Society.
